The Building Inspection Department enforces all building codes, acts and regulations. The department inspects all phases of construction, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing , structural installations and acts as consultant to other town departments and agencies.

Building Permits

A permit is required for any person who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by state code, or to cause any such work to be done. The property owner is responsible for obtaining a building permit, but often a contractor will apply on behalf of the property owner.  A double fee is charged for work being done without a permit.

Before applying for a permit, you should review the flow chart for construction documents to see what documentation is required.

Forms are available from the department's permits and forms page. Payment and any necessary documentation must accompany the application.

All work can be performed between the hours of 7:00 a.m and 10:00 p.m Monday through Saturday and the hours between 9:00 a.m and 10:00 p.m on Sunday.
