Department Description
The Wethersfield Parks and Recreation Department provides year-round activities for all ages. Our offerings include programs in Aquatics, Arts, Cultural Events, Environmental Education, Fitness and Sports, Holiday Events, Special Events and Therapeutic Recreation, to name a few. In addition, we oversee the development and use of our town parks, recreation facilities and athletic fields.
Some of our facilities include the Solomon Welles House, Nature Center, Cove Boat Launch area, Heritage Way Bike Trail and Mikey's Place. The Department operates the William J. Pitkin Community Center for many recreation programs and community events. It also includes the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center, Wethersfield Senior Center, Wethersfield Community Television and serves as the town emergency shelter. Adjacent to the Community Center is Willard Pool, a summer swimming facility. Mill Woods Park has many facilities including a playground and picnic area with bocce courts, an outdoor swim center, dog park, skate park, tennis and basketball courts, soccer, little league and softball fields. Wethersfield has 644 acres of parkland offering both passive and active recreation activities. All these facilities can be located by checking Recreation Facilities.
Other functions of the department include: providing support services to many town groups including the Memorial Day Parade Committee, sports leagues, and the Conservation Commission; serve as liaison to organizations such as the Wethersfield Advisory Committee For People With Disabilities and Senior Citizen Advisory Board; provide sponsorship to specialized groups such as the Barracudas Swim Team and Wethersfield Teen Theater. The Department works jointly with town appointed boards such as the Solomon Welles House Committee, the Parks and Recreation Board and the Harbor Management Commission.
Our programs change as our residents needs and interests change. We are committed to the highest levels of services possible and to improving the quality of life in our community.
