The Building Inspection Department enforces all building codes, acts and regulations. The department inspects all phases of construction, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing and structural installations. Inspectors also enforce the zoning regulations and inoperable vehicle ordinance. Additionally, the Building Official is the liaison to the Zoning Board of Appeals, and acts as consultant to other town departments and agencies. A staff member is Historic District Coordinator and liaison to the Historic District Commission.
A permit is required for any person who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by state code, or to cause any such work to be done. The property owner is responsible for obtaining a building permit, but often a contractor will apply on behalf of the property owner. A double fee is charged for work being done without a permit.
You may apply for a building permit and check the status of an application using the town's online permit system. Any required fees may be paid securely online, or in the traditional way by mail or in person. Before applying for a permit, you should review the flow chart for construction documents to see what documentation is required.
If you prefer, you can also apply by mail or in person. Forms are available from the department's permits and forms page. Payment and any necessary documentation must accompany the application.
