YARD WASTE COLLECTION PROGRAM

The Town of Wethersfield now offers a yard waste collection program.  Separating yard waste from the 
green trash barrels greatly reduces the volume of trash sent to regional trash facilities and reduces the 
amount of methane gas released into the atmosphere.  It’s a great way for Wethersfield residents to 
contribute to Wethersfield’s environmental sustainability efforts. 

WHEN:  April (first full week) through November (last full week)

WHERE:  Place yard waste container(s) at the curb by 6:00 am on recycling collection day

ACCEPTABLE OPTIONS TO DISPOSE OF YARD WASTE THROUGH THE COLLECTION PROGRAM

1.  Residents may purchase a 95 gallon brown barrel for yard waste.  The brown barrel cost is $98.64.  
Call Paine’s Inc. at (860) 844-3000 to order a brown barrel.  Payment with a credit card or check prior to 
barrel delivery is required.  This is a one-time fee and the resident then owns the barrel and is able to 
take with them should they move.  Initial limit of 1 barrel per household.

2.  Residents may place yard waste in 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags for placement at the curb on 
recycling collection day.  Total weight of each bag must not exceed 40 pounds.  Bags are not supplied by the program.
  
3.  Bundled brush and branches no more than 1 inch in diameter and up to 3 feet in length accepted 
ONLY if bundled with organic or cotton twine.

Yard waste is NOT permitted in trash barrels.

LISTING OF NON ACCEPTABLE YARD WASTE MATERIAL:

• Bundles tied with wire, nylon rope, synthetic line of any kind
• Items not tied appropriately will be left curbside
• No invasive plant material, (ie: bishop's weed, giant hogweed, garden heliotrope, bamboo)
• Yard waste bags contaminated with rocks, soil, dirt
• Bundled material LONGER than 3 feet
• Bags and bundled material weighing MORE than 40 pounds
• Trash.
• Metal
• Plastic bags, items or materials
• Flowerpots or trays
• Stumps or logs
• Lumber
• Demolition Debris
• Apples or other fruit
• Food waste of any type

ACCEPTABLE YARD WASTE PRESENTATION:

• 30-gallon biodegradable brown bags weighing no more than 40 lbs.
• Bundled branches and brush up to 1 inch in diameter and up to 3 feet in length (accepted ONLY if bundled with organic or cotton twine)
• Brown barrels (95-gallon barrels available for purchase - see details below)

• Leaves
• Grass
• Pine needles
• Pinecones
• Acorns .
• Bundled Brush - must be tied with organic or cotton twine
• Twigs, (no larger than you thumb)
• Hedge Trimmings
• Dead plant vegetation
• Weeds
• Lawn thatch

The Yard Waste Collection Program does NOT replace the Fall Leaf Pick Up Program.

The program is available to all single family and multi-family homes, up to 3 units.

The program is NOT available for apartments and condominiums.
