Marriage License Requirements

Marriage Licenses are issued by the Town Clerk's office in the town where the marriage will be performed. Once issued, the marriage license is good for 65 days. There is no waiting period between applying for and receiving your license.

The Town Clerk's office does not perform wedding ceremonies. We are happy to provide the couple with a list of Wethersfield Justices of the Peace. Arrangements can be made directly with the Justice you select.

The couple must appear in the Town Clerk's office to sign the marriage license. You will be asked to provide the name and contact information of the officiant as well as the date and location of the ceremony. You will also be asked questions regarding your parentage: where your mother and father were born and your mother's maiden name.

The fee for the license is $50. We also suggest you purchase a certified copy of the license at the same time for an additional $20. Total cost for the license and certified copy is $70.

Please be sure to bring identification—a driver's license or a valid passport. We accept cash or a personal check for the license.

The process takes from 20-30 minutes depending on activity in the office—no appointment is necessary. The hours to obtain a marriage license are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. During the summer, licenses are issued Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The Wethersfield Town Hall is located at 505 Silas Deane Highway. If you have any questions, please call our office at (860) 721-2880.
