Certificate of Trade Name
A Certificate of Trade Name:
- Is required by § 35-1 of the Connecticut General Statutes. The Penalty for failure to file a Trade Name Certificate is $500.00.
- Is for the purpose of identifying those doing
business in the state under a fictitious Trade Name, i.e. for consumer
protection purposes.
- Does not protect that name of the business from use
by someone else. It may be protected from use by others by registering
it with the Secretary of the State.
A blank Trade Name Certificate may be obtained from the Town
Clerk's Office, or can be downloaded in PDF format from our forms page.
All officers of the business must sign the Certificate in the presence
of a Notary Public or a Commissioner of the Superior Court.
A Trade Name Certificate should be filed in every town in
which the business is providing services. A Trade Name Certificate is
filed in the Town Clerk's Office for a fee of $10.00 as soon as all of
the necessary information has been furnished (i.e. Name of business,
address of business (no P.O. Box addresses will be accepted), all names,
addresses, and signatures of officers, and the signature of a Notary
Public or Commission of the Superior Court.
The Town Clerk's Office is in the Town Hall, 505 Silas Deane
Highway, Wethersfield, CT and is normally open Monday through Friday
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
When filing a Trade Name Certificate, the individual(s)
doing business in Wethersfield should speak with the Town Planner and
the Assessor in order to insure that the business is not in violation of
current zoning regulations and/or taxation rules. The Town Planner's
telephone number is (860) 721-2838 and the Assessor's telephone number
is (860) 721-2812.
