Motor Vehicle Tax
Motor vehicle taxes have a DUE DATE of JULY 1st. All motor vehicle taxes not paid in full on or before the first business day of the month following the due date are subject to interest. All taxes paid after August 1st will be subject to interest at the rate of 1.5% per month (18% per year) FROM THE DUE DATE of JULY 1st. The minimum interest charge is $2.
If a taxpayer does not receive a bill, they should contact the tax collector to get a copy. Failure to receive a tax bill does not invalidate the tax or the interest.
All information concerning motor vehicle taxes is based on how a motor vehicle was registered with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles on October 1. In order to cancel a registration YOU MUST RETURN your Connecticut license plates to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
NOTE: The Department of Motor Vehicles DOES NOT notify the town when you no longer have a motor vehicle. If you no longer own an automobile the taxpayer is responsible for notifying the Assessor's Office. Any questions concerning motor vehicles that are sold, stolen or destroyed should be directed to the Assessor's office at (860) 721-2810.
