Police Cadet Post

The Wethersfield Police Cadets, established in 1983, is a community oriented program under the direction of the Wethersfield Police Department, its Police Chief and Advisors. Its purpose is to foster our youth by encouraging leadership, teamwork, academic excellence, volunteerism, and developing conflict resolution skills.

The program is intended for youths aged 14-21 years of age who are interested in law enforcement.

The Cadets meet biweekly on Thursday evening at Police Headquarters and learn different aspects of law enforcement related skills. The Cadets receive extensive training in felony motor vehicle stops; domestic disturbances; emotionally disturbed persons; traffic direction; suspicious persons; D.U.I. enforcement; and building searches just to name a few.

The Wethersfield Police Cadets are also given opportunities for a ride along with Wethersfield Police Officers. The ride along gives the Cadet hands on experiences of the duties of a sworn Police Officer. This opportunity also allows the Cadet to interact with various Police Officers who serve as mentors to the Cadet program.

The Wethersfield Police Cadets assist the Wethersfield Police Department with traffic at civic organization sponsored events including but limited to the Cornfest; health fairs; Unico Annual Dinner; road races, Memorial Day Parade; and St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The Cadets are given the opportunity to attend the Cadet Police Academy which is held for one week during the summer. The Cadets are taught law enforcement related classes by Police Officers from the New England area. Approximately 300 youths from different states attend the Cadet Police Academy.

Recruitment will occur during the months of September and October. Each Candidate will be interviewed and must pass a background process as well as a probationary period. Anyone interested in joining the Wethersfield Police Cadets are asked to contact Detective Norberto “Junito” Mendez at 860-721-2763.
